Jungle walk Iquitos, Loreto, Peru, Tuesday, 29 March 2005 12:38pm

We were supposed to get up at 6 for a morning birdwatching expedition, but I decided that I'd be sleepy all day if I did, so I went back to sleep.

Our after-breakfast outing was a walk through the jungle near the lodge. Usiel pointed out a variety of plants used in local medicine and various snails, birds, ants (the bullet ants were an inch long), a pygmy marmoset (Yuri got to see her pocket monkey), and a tree rat.

Oh, and mosquitos. We got a close-up introductioni to those. I realized that, while I brought DEET repellant, I didn't bring anything like calamine lotion for reducing the itching after I get bitten. Oops.
