Bat Cave, Motorcycle Roads Blacksburg, VA, Wednesday, 02 November 2011 6:41pm

My friend TJ emailed me to let me know that she was going to be driving from San Antonio, TX to Philadelphia, PA. Since that's pretty much the reverse of my route, we decided to meet up somewhere along the way. Due to various scheduling difficulties, that didn't happen quite as planned, but we did finally meet up in Seneca Rocks. We got to hang out for a while, and then visited a cave before we went our separate ways.

The Smoke Hole Caverns are the first caves I've visited on this trip that have bats living in them, little insectivores. The cave also has an impressive artesian well.

The rest of the day was spent on some excellent roads. I've been trying to hit as many of the AMA members' choices as I can. Today I rode US 33 from Seneca Rocks back into Virginia (#12), part of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park, and rode south on the Blue Ridge Parkway (#2) until it got dark. They're all winding mountainous roads with great views.

There were a lot of whitetail deer on the Parkway, especially towards dusk.
