MANUAL OF SALES 2004 - 2006 MUYUNA AMAZON LODGE, IQUITOS, PERU

Normally, a manual of sales talks exclusively about the product that is being offered. This time we are not going to tell you that this is a different one, but by this document, we also want to explain you why the Amazon River is one of the most important rivers of the world, why we have done a lodge close to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve and, specially, why we have chosen to construct a lodge to diffuse love to nature and the environment, betting our time and our lives to the adventure of promoting this important piece of land in Peru.

THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

The Amazon Rainforest is one of the last lungs of the earth. Biologically is one of the richest places in the world in biodiversity, which lost may cause several damages to the humanity. It is our moral responsibility to take care of this tropical forest because more than the third part of the species of the world live and reproduce in it. According to recently studies, the Amazon River is the largest in the world, covering 2í300,000 square miles, which is the 20% of fresh water of the world.

In the Amazon lives the largest freshwater fish of the world called Paiche (Arapaima Gigas) which can grow up to 2.50 m. We can also find the Ronsoco which is the biggest gnawer of the world. There are about 30,000 types of plants that grow in the Amazon shore, as well as 4,000 different species of butterflies and 2,000 different kinds of fish (more than those found in the Atlantic Ocean), 4,000 species of birds, 150 species of reptiles and 361 species of mammals.

This extraordinary biodiversity is the consequence of the intense rain and the complex topography. In this eco-region, we can find the flat tropical forest, floodies areas covered with date palms and 69,000 miles of bamboo. This makes possible the fast growth of tropical plants, like some palms (triartea bactris euterpe) also other kinds of vegetations like the bromiliaceas, 22 varieties of the appreciated orchid, climbing plants and lianas, like the urticaria tormentosa (is used to prevent cancer and aids) and ayahuasca (hallucinogenic plant). We can observe in the three trunks different kinds of ferns, lichen, and moss. It is the home of Victoria Regia, the largest aquatic plant in the whole world, its diameter may reach 2 meters.

With flora diversity like this, many animals find a perfect habitat for living, the same that your passengers can watch in this grateful trip to our Amazon.

WHAT DOES MUYUNA MEAN?

ìMuyunaî is a quechua word that means a whirlpool. Francisco Izquierdo, Peruvian writer, in his book titled ìMuyunaî, gives to this word a poetic sense: ìMuyuna is the whirlpool of the river of life that catches the navigator unaware and traps him without mercyî. Meanwhile, jungle people calls ìmuyunaî to that energy that makes someone return again and again to the same place having the feeling of being trapped by a whirlpool.

This is the reason why we named Muyuna to the lodge, for the visitors who have an irresistible desire of returning to the peruvian magic jungle.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE MUYUNA LODGE

The MUYUNA AMAZON LODGE is located in the Yanayacu river banks at 140 kms. (84 miles) southeast from Iquitos city, the capital of the Peruvian department of Loreto, very close to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, with its 2í080,000 hectares is the biggest in Peru. This is why we can GUARANTEE that your passengers will observe animals in their own habitat.

Muyuna is located in the Yanayacu River that means ìblack waterî (in QuechuaóIncaís language), because of the darkness given by the minerals that it brings from the highlands. The ten lakes that are around Muyuna also have black water, making easier the fishing and bird watching excursions.

The Muyuna Lodge can receive up to 48 people in only 11 bungalows of two, three, four or six beds. They have their private bathroom with modern tiles, comfortable big beds and a walk-in-closet. The illumination is made by the use of kerosene lamps. Each bungalow is protected hermetically by a mosquito net and has a terrace with its own hammock facing the river, where is possible to watch Dolphins as well as fish in the riverís flood times. Your passengers can be pleased by colorful sunsets and by the deafening silence of the rainforest at night.

Close to the lodge is San Juan de Yanayacu, a small village, where the time seems to be stopped. This people born and grew up having jungle as their habitat, without fashion mode, electricity, internet or big amounts of money. Our intention is not to change their customs, this is why the visits our tourists make to them are very spontaneous, they are not going to find a ìprepared and touristyî show.

FAUNA

Your passengers will have several opportunities to watch different types of monkeys (squirrel monkey, pygmy marmoset, dusky cappucin monkey, black monkey, howler monkey), three toed sloth, pink and gray fresh water dolphins, birds (kingfishers, hoatzin, macaws, toucans, horned screamers, ducks, egrets, parrots, parakeets), butterflies (blue morphos, heliconias), giant frogs, tarantulas, fish (peacock bass, electric eels, cat fish, piranhas). With less possibilities ant eaters, river otters, sting rays, wild pigs, etc. Likewise, enormous trees (ceiba, strangle figs, rubber trees), medicinal plants (cat claw, hundred of different resins), aqcuatic plants (victoria regia, jacinto of water), etc.

The following is a list that our guides made, with the animals that we can guarantee their observation:

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

One of our priorities is to conserve the environment as we have found it, finding the right usage of the recourses without destroying the ones that can not be restored.

To minimize our impact in this primary rainforest, we recycle, composting, organic gardening, and biodegradable detergents. The non renewable garbage is taken back to Iquitos. The drains from the bathrooms go to a septic well which we clean and maintain. We do not kill local animals for eating or for fun. Entering to the Yanayacu River, we slow down the speed boat to avoid disturbing the animals.

GUIDES

The manners that the guides communicate their knowledge and enthusiasm are the most important things for having a grateful experience. That is the reason why an exhaustive searching is necessary. In our bilingual guides your passengers will find the sensibility and reliability that are needed. They, all Peruvians, were born and raised around the jungle, having enough knowledge to be doctors applying natural medicine whenever it is needed, and in other moments seem to be part of the nature climbing huge trees like jungle animals. Your passengers will find on them the enough knowledge for answering the most strange and researched questions than an expert biologist may ask.

Following our philosophy of making the passenger feel comfortable and satisfied, the guide will do all his best to reach this aim. This is possible because the groups are small ones, in this way, your passengers will feel safe and free to ask anything they want.

WEATHER

As all the jungles in the world, we have in Iquitos, tropical weather. The rains are unpredictable, but few times it lasts for more than two hours, and mainly it rains in the night. December to April suppose to be the rainy season. During April to June, the snow of the highlands melts and this makes the Amazon River increase its level. The white sandy beaches appear during July until November. This is the best season for fishing. As you can see, your passengers can come to visit Muyuna anytime of the year.

ITINERARIES

Although the tours are established, they are flexible and can be changed according to the passengers requirements. For example, they can choose to sleep in the lodge and other nights in the outdoors, or stay more days than it was planned. Saying that the packages are flexible, we mean that we can make special programs for groups that have a particular interest (lumbermen, biologists, doctors, birdwatchers, etc.). Only you have to consult us in advance.

As Iquitos is a jungle city without highways that connects it to other cities, the only way to reach it is by air or by river. There are flights that come from Lima, Pucallpa, and Tarapoto. The airlines that come to Iquitos: Lan Peru, Magenta Air, Aerocondor and Tans.

The tour to Muyuna departs from Iquitos at 9:30 a.m. arriving at the lodge about 12.30 p.m. If there is a delay in the flight, we wait for passengers. The tour ends the last day after lunch, arriving in Iquitos about 4:30 p.m., but can take them sooner if they have the afternoon flight of Tans or Magenta.

The following airline schedules were updated on February 15, 2005. Each round trip cost around US $170 (including taxes). In all the Peruvian Airports you should pay an extra tax (for the airport) of US $5.
