Yawn Cuzco, Cuzco, Peru, Saturday, 26 March 2005 10:34pm

A couple of lazy days in Cuzco. Mostly reading and eating with a bit of shopping thrown in for variety.

I think we're all a little out of it after Machu Picchu. I'm still not completely adjusted to the altitude here. I'm still getting headaches and walking uphill is harder than it should be. I'll be happy to get on a plane for somewhere lower tomorrow.

Kola Escocesa: somewhere between black cherry soda and the flavoring in raspberry Jell-o. Quite nice for the first few sips, but it quickly becomes cloying.

Chicha Morada: sweet drink made with corn beer (chicha) and fruit. Reminiscent of sangria.

Fried Cuy (Guinea Pig): tastes just like fried chicken. It's all dark meat, though.

Cuzquena Malta: the local "black" beer. It's really malty, as advertised. Extremely sweet. Pretty boring.

You managed to devour a member of order Rodentia before me! In fact, you nailed family Caviidae, genus Cavia, species porcellus. Congratulations.

"In their wild state, Guinea pigs are found on grassy plains and occupy an ecological niche similar to that of the cow. They move together in small groups (herds) eating grass or whatever other plants they come across."

The next place we're going (Iquitos, on the Amazon) apparently has lots of capybara around for the eating.

Danfuzz loves capybaras. If you see any capybara products on a menu, please bring him photographic evidence - I'm sure he'll be highly amused.
