Yesterday was a travel day. I took a shuttle bus to Leon. It was pretty okay. The countryside is pretty, though not as spectacular as I'd hoped. There were some good views of various volcanos and Lake Managua.
One of the best features of my hotel in León is the roof deck. I watched the sunset up there as guardabarrancos (the national bird) flew overhead. And later, not feeling like I wanted to be very social, I bought some supplies at the local supermarket and sat in one of the deck chairs and watched the fireworks.
There isn't a single coordinated municipal display here. Instead, there are large numbers of random people setting off their own displays all over the city. There were a few that got going soon after sunset, and it gradually built up until, around midnight, there were fireworks everywhere I looked.
It might have been clever to travel today instead of yesterday. All of the museums are closed, along with the tour agencies. Ah, well. A relaxed day will do me no harm.
